DESCRIPTION
A pyridine type alkaloid with the molecular formula C10H14N2. Commonly known as nicotine. Found in economic plants of the tobacco genus. Colorless volatile liquid with irritating odor, melting point - 79 ℃, boiling point 246.7 ℃ (745mm Hg), relative density 1.0097 (20/4 ℃), specific rotation - 169 °. It can be distilled by steam. It is prone to deterioration in the air. Easily soluble in water, ethanol, ether, chloroform, and petroleum ether. Nicotine can form crystalline single and double salts with various inorganic acids (such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid) and organic acids (such as tartaric acid, picric acid). The melting point of double picric acid salt is 278 ℃, which is commonly used to identify nicotine. Nicotine forms a crystalline complex with mercury dioxide, which can be used to purify nicotine.
USES
The cardiovascular system is characterized by an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, as well as a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure. It can also act on the central nervous system such as breathing and vomiting.
