Properties

White crystalline powder.
It is soluble in hot water, hardly soluble in cold water, and easily soluble in ethanol, ether, benzene, chloroform and acetic acid.
The effect of ferric chloride is reddish purple.

Production method

Add chlorobenzene to an enamel pot to steam the moisture to below 0.03%, add salicylic acid, and evenly pass chlorine to a predetermined amount at 110±2°C. Take a sample and observe the precipitate cooled to 30°C, filter, measure the melting point, and take 167-175°C as qualified to obtain a chlorobenzene solution of 5-chlorosalicylic acid. If the chlorination reaction is carried out under the irradiation of a fluorescent lamp, the chlorine can reach the theoretical amount at 55-80°C. After sampling and testing, the remaining chlorine is removed, cooled, filtered, washed with chlorobenzene, and dried to obtain the finished product.
